Should the U.S. ban the sale of assault-style rifles?

Any such ban would of course extend to the police, military, and private security, riiiiiiight...?

I read something recently (may've just been his Wikipedia article) suggesting the whole O.J. Replying to dagman: β€œGenie's out of the bottle now. We need to deal with it before it deals with us.”

'Tear them all down' is one way to do so, isn't it? I'm not certain how well the "genie" analogy works in this case; if those data-centers are the "bottles", the "genies" are still in them and their out-ness is an illusion.

Are you familiar with "The Creature from Jekyll Island"? History shows that flipping democracy the bird doesn't prevent politicization (look no further than the SCOTUS), and that's only the beginning of what's wrong with it. I'm not saying Trump's involvement would be for the better, but the whole reason he's the President to start with is public desperation, fury, and disgust at being shut out of what's supposed to be OUR government, and the Fed is a fine example. "No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." - Winston Churchill

I did acknowledge that the specific "alternative" being mentioned here seemed unlikely to deliver improvement, my point was only that the Fed doesn't deserve defending. With respectful apologies to The Broad-Brimmed Wanderer, the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend.

Replying to dagman: β€œOf course not. It's the people's house. Mainstream media is our access, and a check on power.”

Surely you jest. Corporate Media works for THEM, not for US. The "4th Estate" ideal you describe hasn't been remotely true since Cronkite had the gall to tell the truth about Vietnam, and the fates of Manning/Snowden/Assange makes the message crystal-clear. If only he hadn't banned them on obvious partisan lines rather than kicking out ALL the Wall Street/Pentagon/Davos cheerleader-squads, I'd have been tempted to call this a good thing (wouldn't change much by itself, but an enjoyable nose-punch to those who deserve it).

Twenty-five years after 9/11, should fighting terrorism still be the top priority for U.S. national security?

"Terrorism" was horseshit from Day 1. Who says those lobbyists and apparatchiks shouldn't be yoked with term-limits too? At least with term-limits, A) Said apparatchiks will become harder to overlook B) There will be more circulation, more people who can say they've been in Congress C) It will corrode the 'Congress community', which is actually a huge problem because the great irony we face is that our government has effectively seceded from the country! Should the U.S. spend more or less on foreign aid to other countries?

It sounds great (just like it's supposed to), but in practice, "foreign aid" has mostly amounted to colonial subversion efforts that exploits domestic liberal charity to achieve the opposite. The problem with saying "the government should do more" is, well...just look at our government. Reagan's "government IS the problem" line may have been a feint to flush out opposition to the corporate takeover at the time he said it, but now that that's happened, you might say it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. This question relies on all the wrong divisions.
