It sounds great (just like it's supposed to), but in practice, "foreign aid" has mostly amounted to colonial subversion efforts that exploits domestic liberal charity to achieve the opposite. The problem with saying "the government should do more" is, well...just look at our government. Reagan's "government IS the problem" line may have been a feint to flush out opposition to the corporate takeover at the time he said it, but now that that's happened, you might say it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. This question relies on all the wrong divisions.

Somebody once defined foreign aid as taking money from poor people in rich countries and giving it to rich people in poor countries. Let’s take care of our own first, then by all means look at the rest of the world

Richer countries should spend more on making the world better.

More than since the recent cuts. Foreign aid buys goodwill, influence, and stability at a pretty modest cost.
