I don't have a problem with robot friends (perhaps even with-benefits!); I DO have a problem with LLM-based ones. LLMS ARE NOT FUCKING A.I. AND NEVER WILL BE, ALRIGHT?! The implicit need for an Internet-connection, turning that more and more into The Borg Hivemind, is no small turnoff, either....
I can only speak to my own experience which includes several deep and informative exchanges with Anthropic's Claude. I have my Claude.md file set up to encourage vigorous pushback. This sometimes leads to a deeper understanding of other views; always a good thing.
Probably both, but on balance I think they’ll help. For those feeling isolated, an always-on partner might be better than having no one. Risk is when it replaces rather than supplements human relationships.
