A well-known art critic visits a gallery where an up-and-coming artist is exhibiting his work. The artist spots the critic and says, "Hey, I'd be interested to hear your opinion of my work." The critic looks him over and snorts, "It's worthless". "I know," replies the artist, "But I'd like to hear it anyway!"

:) When it comes to movies, though, I do find the Rotten Tomatoes critics scores to be pretty helpful. Most movies over 90-95% are pretty good bets, I find.

I don't bother with that either, though I can see how anonymous amateurs might come out more reliable than professional/"celebrity" critics.

Generally the consensus critic ratings are not bad. One caveat though: Since it's based on a thumbs up/down rating, movies that are broadly considered just pretty good score highly. That's an argument for anchoring on the few critics you trust, for sure.
