Should the U.S. return to the Moon before going to Mars?

A few years back they were hiring engineers to work on a “gas station” to be put in lunar orbit and serve as a stepping stone to go further. Why not focus on mining the asteroids for profit…no gravity well to fight against and profitable returns to fund expansion?

Crawl, walk, run. Mars is ambitious and dangerous. Let's learn through repetition closer to home before we take that leap. Mars will still be there.

Walk before you run. The trip to mars is 7+ MONTHS using current technology. Even a minor oopsie won't be fixed by the cavalry riding to the rescue. I'm not even sure sending humans to Mars makes sense. It has a really inhospitable climate, average temperature is about 85 below zero, there is no atmosphere to speak of, and most of the water is in the polar ice caps. Terrible place to live. Terrible place to die.
