Was President Trump right to let AI company CEOs adopt their own safety rules instead of federal law?

At a White House AI summit on Sept. 29, 2026, President Trump and CEOs from Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic signed a two-page 'morally binding' pledge to adopt their own AI safety safeguards rather than accept binding federal regulation.

It'll take more than "morally binding" independent actions of the frontier labs for adequate protections. As said in other threads, this is going to require global cooperation. I'm not sure we can get there, but the fact that we were able to avoid nuclear war for so long gives me some hope. That said, this is a very different kind of threat.

If you're voting "yes, right call," what happens the first time a company's own rules fail and someone gets hurt — who's on the hook then?
