Quite a bit of software has been written by machine for decades. The abysmal quality of modern software isn't do to an influx of new AI it's due to large companies not being held to account for their failures

Very true. I'm hopeful AI will help weed out bad software experiences, if only because better alternatives will come to market quickly. Fertile ground, I think.

Not yet, but we're getting close to the point where AI will outperform humans in every coding exercise. Of course, human validation of that will still be welcome.

Anyone who has been involved in software development understands that no code should be launched into commerce without being carefully checked - regardless of who or what wrote it. Even carefully written and reviewed code can have bugs or unanticipated actions, stack overflows, failures to release memory blocks, and security vulnerabilities.
