Is the Justice Department right to investigate sitting members of Congress in the weeks before the 2026 midterm elections?
Federal agents searched a sitting member of Congress as the Justice Department pursues investigative steps against political candidates that it has historically avoided in the weeks before an election.
DOJ has avoided investigative splashes involving politicians in the weeks before an election. There is nothing to say that investigators couldn't work quietly behind the scenes, gathering evidence and building a timeline. But a high profile raid in the run up to an election looks like abuse of power. It will be interesting to see if there is actual evidence of criminal activity or if, as in the case of Lisa Cook (a Federal Reserve Board member Trump tried to fire) it is some insignificant paperwork error.
If you picked "only if the evidence is strong" — strong enough for who, DOJ or you personally, and what happens when those two disagree in October?
